Proposed budget cuts concern Canadian horsemen

Posted: Monday, February 13, 2012 8:24 PM

A proposed plan to cut Ontario’s $345-million per year subsidy to support horse racing has prompted concerns from many that work in the industry.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan on Monday outlined the next steps in the government’s plan to eliminate the deficit, including the elimination of the support package.

Duncan explained that since the introduction of the 2011 budget, growth in the global economy has slowed, and that steps must be taken to slow down the rate of growth of government spending.

“Eliminating the deficit is essential to continued economic growth and job creation,” Duncan said in statement. “A strong economy supports the schools and hospitals families rely on.”

Woodbine Entertainment Group said on Monday in a release that it is the engine of the Ontario horse racing industry, which in 2010 was responsible for approximately 60,000 jobs and more than $2-billion of expenditures annually.

“WEG is very proud of its partnership with the Province of Ontario,” Woodbine President Nick Eaves said. “WEG entered into a contract with the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation (OLG) in 1999. WEG has invested significantly in providing the venue, the infrastructure, and many of the support services for the OLG’s slots-at-racetracks operations at Woodbine and Mohawk.

“The result has been a fantastic partnership which has generated significant revenue for the Province of Ontario. WEG is committed to working with the Province as it undertakes this review of job creation and economic growth.”

Horsemen also expressed their concerns about the cuts.

Jim Thibert, chief executive officer of the Fort Erie Live Race Consortium—the not-for-profit group that runs the 115-year-old Fort Erie racetrack—told the Niagara Bullet News Duncan and supporters of the plan are not looking at the big picture.

“There’s over 60,000 jobs, mostly in rural Ontario, related to horse breeding and horse racing,” Thibert said.

Unfortunately in a capitalistic society there should be little control or government investment in private enterprises. Paying farmers not to grow crops, or subsidzing breeding and racing programs means government intervention and control. Many times these programs are abused or scamed. Citizens keep complaining about to much government, yet if it affects their personal agendas it doesn't seem to bother them.

I have never read as many times as in have the past four years where 'losing jobs' is used to extort government policies that protects indvidual businesses or professions. A capitalistic society can not have it both ways. Business's need to support themselves and any auxillary programs necessary to their viability

This is similiar to the ridiculously unfair practice of taxpayers picking up the fixed costs of professional sport franchise's by building them elaborate stadiums, which then allows owners to pay exorbitant salaries to the participants.
