Single pool record for first Derby Future Wager

Posted: Sunday, February 12, 2012 9:12 PM

by Mike Curry

The opening pool of the 2012 Kentucky Derby Future Wager eclipsed the previous single-pool record for total wagering handle with $631,304 combined wagered in the win and exacta pools.

The previous record of $620,362 was established in the opening pool in 2005, when only win wagering was available.

Total combined wagering handle for win and exacta wagering rose 6.6% compared with the first pool in 2011. Win wagering rose 2.9% to $494,263, while exacta wagering swelled 22.2% to $137,041.

The mutuel field, consisting of all other three-year-old not offered among the 23 individual betting interests in the first 2012 Derby Future Wager, was favored at 3-to-2 odds. Union Rags, the 2011 Champagne Stakes (G1) winner, was the top individual wagering interest at 7.40-to-1 with Holy Bull Stakes (G3) winner Algorithms next at 12.90-to-1. Hansen, the 2011 champion two-year-old male, rose from 12-to-1 on Mike Battaglia’s morning line to 26.90-to-1.

The longest shot among the individual betting interests was Sham Stakes (G3) third-place finisher Longview Drive, who at 141.10-to-1 would return $284.20 if he were to prevail in the Kentucky Derby.

Other notable horses: Alpha (19.40-to-1), Creative Cause (17.80-to-1), El Padrino (16.10-to-1), Fed Biz (21.10-to-1), Gemologist (22.20-to-1), and Out of Bounds (23.50-to-1).
