Jockey Delgado suspended 30 days for February 1 ride

Jockey Alberto Delgado has been suspended for 30 calendar days, beginning on Sunday, for his ride aboard stakes winner My Sweet Nenana on February 1 in the seventh race at Laurel Park.
Delgado, 47, a regular rider in the Maryland colony who ranked third during the track’s winter meeting with 12 victories from 47 mounts through Wednesday, will not be allowed to ride again until March 13.
Stewards Phil Grove, John Burke, and Adam Campola issued the penalty at a hearing on Wednesday morning at Laurel Park.
According to the Equibase chart, My Sweet Nenana was “a bit rank leaving the starting gate, was immediately taken in hand, stayed inside horses and raced on her own courage.”
The six-year-old Jazz Club mare finished seventh of ten, nine lengths behind the winner, Iris’ Proverb, as the 1-to-2 favorite in the $5,000 claiming race for fillies and mares.
“The reason that it took a week was because our investigator had to interview all the participants, and we talked to the trainer and Albert,” Burke said. “Albert said he was afraid of the horse and we concur. We don’t believe there was anything nefarious going on here. Nothing points to it.”
Burke and Campola said that Delgado, who won the 1982 Eclipse Award as outstanding apprentice jockey, is not expected to appeal the decision.
