Champagne winner Union Rags drills half-mile at Palm Meadows

Phyllis Wyeth’s homebred Champagne Stakes (G1) winner Union Rags breezed a bullet half-mile on Monday in :48.67 at Palm Meadows Training Center as he prepares for his three-year-old debut for trainer Michael Matz.

The bay Dixie Union colt, second to Hansen in the 2011 Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1), turned in the fastest of 27 timed workouts at the distance.

"He did it real easy," Matz said. "We'll probably work him with another horse next week. He's doing very well.”

Matz said the plan is to start Union Rags in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on February 26 at Gulfstream Park as a first step toward the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).

At Gulfstream on Monday, Augustin Stable's three-year-old Ever So Lucky breezed five furlongs in 1:01.75, fourth-fastest of eight timed moves at the distance, as he prepares to make his 2012 debut on Saturday in the $150,000 Hutcheson Stakes (G2) for Racing Hall of Fame trainer Jonathan Sheppard. The bay Indian Charlie colt finished second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) on November 26 at Churchill Downs in his second career start,

Trainer Eddie Kenneally on Monday said that Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) winner Battle Hardened had returned to Palm Meadows from Tampa Bay Downs and was doing very well following Saturday’s 1 1/4-length victory.

Michael Tabor’s and Susan Magnier’s three-year-old Giant’s Causeway colt was winless in three starts last year with two second-place finishes prior to his victory in his three-year-old debut.

"We think he's a nice horse with a future," Kenneally said. "We wanted to get some graded earnings, but we have a lot of confidence in him and [Tampa] was a good place to take a shot."

Kenneally said the $1-million Florida Derby (G1) on March 31 at Gulfstream and the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 10 both are possibilities for Battle Hardened’s next start.
