The 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) all-weather contest has attracted an impressive roster of 271 horses, representing 12 countries in which the contenders are being trained.
Eight of the 11 trainers to have won the Dubai World Cup are represented by nominees. Saeed bin Suroor, who holds the record with five Dubai World Cup wins, has six nominees.

The all-star list of nominees include three horses that earned Eclipse Awards in the United States: Animal Kingdom, the 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner, champion three-year-old male; Acclamation, champion older male; and Royal Delta, Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) winner and champion three-year-old filly.

There is also a number of 2011 Dubai World Cup programme veterans - River Jetez, (2nd Dubai Duty Free [UAE-G1]), (Transcend, 2nd Dubai World Cup), Wigmore Hall, (3rd Dubai Duty Free), Gitano Hernando (6th Dubai World Cup – winner of the 2011 Singapore Airlines International Cup [Sin-G1]) and Master of Hounds (2nd UAE Derby).
Martin Talty, International Manager of the Dubai Racing Club said: “The Dubai Racing Club and the Dubai World Cup are committed to the era of international racing. Evident from the increased number of entries we received, it is clear that the world’s owners and trainers appreciate our international season and events. Gonna be a lot of disappointed owners and trainers this year if 271 different horses were nominated for this years Dubai World Cup. Because only 14 get into the field. I'm not sure if Game on Dude will get into the field or not if both Animal Kingdom and Royal Delta's connections actually decide to take them both to Dubai for the race? Last 2 years, only 2 American horses have gotten each time, and both times it's been Gio Ponti and Richard's Kid. Don't see them letting any more than 2 in again this year with all of the top horses from Japan and Europe lined up to run in the race. JMO
