Despite being shuffled back on the turn, Midnight Transfer closed with a rush from the outside to nip Got Even by a head in the final strides of the $82,500 San Pedro Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita Park.

The chestnut colt from the first crop of Darley resident stallion Hard Spun picked up his second straight win in the San Pedro after entering the race off a 4 3/4-length romp in a six-furlong maiden special weight race on December 26 at Santa Anita.

Midnight Transfer found an ideal stalking position under Joel Rosario in third through an opening quarter in :21.92 but dropped back to fifth in traffic on the turn. Rosario angled him to the outside in the stretch and the winner accelerated willingly for a thrilling come-from-behind win.

Trained by Carla Gaines for owner Warren B. Williamson, Midnight Transfer is out of the graded-stakes-winning French Deputy mare French Satin, a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner and sire Lion Heart and Grade 3 winner Connemara.

“We’re hoping to stretch him out,” Gaines said. “We’ll look at the San Felipe [Stakes (G2) at 1 1/16 miles on March 10]. We’ll see how he comes out of this.

“[Joel Rosario] had a lot of horse but nowhere to go [after dropping off the pace on the turn], so he was just waiting to get out. But we’re very excited about how he closed.”

Got Even, who entered off a win in the California Breeders Champion Stakes on December 26 at Santa Anita, set a testing pace through a half-mile in :44 and held on determinedly for second.

Grade 1 winner Drill made a strong middle move but flattened out in the stretch and finished fifth for his fourth straight unplaced finish.

Midnight Transfer is the fifth stakes winner from the first crop of Hard Spun, the 2007 King’s Bishop Stakes (G1) winner and runner-up in that year’s Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).
