Discreet Dancer dominant in seasonal debut

Posted: Saturday, January 07, 2012 7:42 PM

Discreet Dancer could not have been more impressive in his second career start, setting the pace under jockey Javier Castellano before pulling away from the field under a hand ride for a 5 1/2-length victory on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The E. Paul Robsham Stable homebred covered one mile in 1:36.32 on a track rated as fast in the win.

The three-year-old colt entered off a 9¾-length romp in his career debut on December 3 in a 5½-furlong maiden special weight race at Gulfstream.

“What a horse,” Castellano said. “It’s almost scary how good he is. He was quick out of the gate and just did everything right. I didn’t want to be on the lead, but he just put himself there. He was just galloping.”

The chestnut colt is from the first crop of Discreet Cat, who stands at Darley in Lexington.

Discreet Dancer is out of the winning Gone West mare West Side Dancer and is her second winner from three foals to race. Her other winner is Grade 2 winner Travelin Man.

The family includes European champion Duke of Marmalade (Ire), Group 1 winner Wolfhound, Grade 2 winner and sire Bite the Bullet, and Grade 3 winner Weekend Surprise among others.

“This race opens up a lot of options,” Pletcher said. “The Holy Bull [Stakes (G3) on January 28 at Gulfstream Park] comes up as a little too quick in three weeks. We’ll see, but I wouldn’t be afraid to stretch him out [two turns] after today.”
