Variety Club much the best in Cape Guineas

Variety Club scored a convincing win in the Cape Premier Yearling Sales Cape Guineas (SAf-G1) on Saturday at Kenilworth and firmed his résumé as a leading contender to the Investec Cape Derby (SAf-G1) on January 28 at Turffontein.

Variety Club shook off stablemate and pacesetter The Balladeer just over 200 meters out and comfortably held back runner-up Silver Flyer to win by 3 1/4 lengths for a third consecutive victory and first win at the highest level.

Trained by Joey Ramsden for Markus and Ingrid Jooste, Variety Club came into the race off wins in the Matchem Stakes (SAf-G3) in October at Durbanville and the Selangor Cup (SAf-G2) on November 27 at Kenilworth. Stepping up in his Group 1 debut, he covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) in 1:39.61 on turf rated as good while winning for the sixth time in nine career starts.

Champion Princess Victoria, attempting to become the first filly in two decades to score the Avontuur Estate Cap Fillies Guineas (SAf-G1) and Cape Guineas double, finished third, one length behind Silver Flyer.

By the Forest Wildcat stallion Var, a top-level European sprinter and South Africa’s leading freshman sire of 2009, Variety Club was bred by Beaumont Stud. The half brother to multiple stakes winner Rhythmically is out of the Secret Prospector mare La Massine.

“On pedigree, he shouldn’t get the ten furlongs [of the Cape Derby], but the further he went today, the better he was going,” Ramsden told Racing Post.
