J C’s Pride, who set a track record at Saratoga Race Course on July 27 in just his second start at two, was euthanized earlier in the week due to complications from an infection.

Owned by Joseph Bucci, the two-year-old Henny Hughes colt set the track record for five furlongs at Saratoga with a front-running 3¼-length victory in :56.54 on a track rated as fast. That effort bested former record-holder Fabulous Force’s time of :56.71.

Trainer Robert Barbara told Daily Racing Form that J C’s Pride developed a salivary gland infection a couple of weeks ago and had been sent to the Mid Atlantic Equine Medical Center in Ringoes, New Jersey. The infection, Barbara said, spread throughout the colt’s body and the horse was euthanized at the medical center earlier this week.

“He was as nice a horse as you’d want and as smart a horse as you’d want to go forward with,” Barbara told the Form. “He had all the tools. He could have been a flash in the pan or he could’ve been a very nice horse.”

Bred in Kentucky by Extern Developments, J C’s Pride won one of three career starts for earnings of $43,000. He finished second in his debut to eventual Sanford Stakes (G2) winner Overdriven.

In his final start, J C’s Pride was pulled up by jockey Alan Garcia in the Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes (G1) and vanned off with an ankle injury. He was the betting public’s third choice in the race at 2.20-to-1

J C’s Pride was sold as a weanling at the 2009 Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $190,000 to CRD Ranch. At the 2010 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, he sold to Hartley/DeRenzo Thoroughbreds for $90,000. Hartley/DeRenzo sold J C’s Pride to Bucci at the 2011 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale for $200,000.
