Previously known as a staple of the Midwest summer racing calendar, the Claiming Crown will debut at a new location and spot on the calendar on Saturday at Fair Grounds.

The Claiming Crown, a series of stakes races restricted to horses with experience in the claiming ranks, was primarily held at Canterbury Park prior to the event’s relocation, with one-year stints at Philadelphia Park and Ellis Park. Traditionally, the races were held in late July.

The 2011 edition of the Claiming Crown attracted 39 entries over five races, down from last year’s pre-scratch total of 52 over six races. The horses qualified for the races with a start at or below designated claiming prices since January 1, 2010.

The schedule will be reduced from six races to five after the $75,000 Claiming Crown Rapid Transit Stakes did not fill. The six-furlong race for horses that have started at the $16,000 claiming level or less only attracted five pre-entries prior to the draw.

Grade 3 winner It Happened Again highlights the $150,000 Claiming Crown Jewel Stakes, a 1 1/8-mile race for three-year-olds and older that have started for a claiming price of $35,000 or less. The five-year-old Proud Citizen gelding won the 2011 Razorback Handicap (G3) at Oaklawn Park and enters off an unplaced finish in the Cornhusker Handicap (G3) at Prairie Meadows Racetrack.

The $100,000 Claiming Crown Emerald Stakes is led by multiple stakes winner Compliance Officer, who won five consecutive races prior to an unplaced finish in the TVG Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1). The Claiming Crown Emerald, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for horses who started for a $25,000 claiming price or less, drew a field of eight.

Multiple stakes winner Wild About Marie is slated to face eight challengers in the $75,000 Claiming Crown Glass Slipper Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for horses with a start at the $16,000 claiming level of below.

Nine horses were entered for the $50,000 Claiming Crown Express Stakes, a six-furlong race for horses with a start at the $7,500 claiming level or below. Seven horses with experience at or below the $7,500 level were entered for the $50,000 Claiming Crown Iron Horse Stakes at 1 1/16 miles.

I really hope the Claiming Crown returns to Canterbury again next year. I really missed not ending my summer with it!
