Buena Vista’s Japan Cup (Jpn-G1) victory on Sunday lifted the five-year-old Special Week mare to the top of the list of all-time leading earners worldwide with $17,018,548.

Japan’s 2010 Horse of the Year, Buena Vista passed T.M.Opera O, who won the Japan Cup en route to Horse of the Year honors in that country in 2000 and retired in 2001 with $16,200,337 in career earnings.

Buena Vista was named Japan’s champion two-year-old filly in 2008 and champion three-year-old filly in 2009 after winning the Yushun Himba (Japanese Oaks) and Oka Sho (Japanese One Thousand Guineas). She won the Tenno Sho (Jpn-G1) (Autumn) and Victoria Mile (Jpn-G1) during her 2010 Horse of the year campaign for trainer Hiroyoshi Matsuda and owner Sunday Racing Co.

A sibling to three stakes winners, Buena Vista is out of 1995 Japanese champion two-year-old filly Biwa Heidi, by Caerleon. She was bred in Japan by Northern Racing.

Sorry, it wasn't equibase that I saw it at. It was the thoroughbred database.

Yea, I looked up on Wikipedia.com, and it says that he earned 984,000,000 yen, which we all know is Japanese earnings. But on Equibase, it says that he only earned $8,401,282, and that I guess at the end of his career. I don't know much about Japans currency, so I don't know how much money in American dollars that would be.

All I know is that Buena Vista has been a pure class race-mare from the first day she ever stepped onto a racetrack in Japan. Not only did she beat the best of females in Japan in the 1000 Guineas and Oaks. But she's been ultra-competitive against the best males in Japan in all of their major G1 stakes over the past 3 season's, too. I can't wait to see her go against the Orfevre, the Japanese Triple Crown winner from this year in the G1 Arima Kinen on Christmas day in Japan!! Should be a great race, and likely Buena Vista's last.

Robin: I also looked it up and Symboli Kris S earned over 984,000,000 yen which equals over $12million in earnings. Maybe the author of the article can tell us all.

Thanks. I think the problem is that he earned 984,724,000 yen, and at the time he was retired that was worth $8.4M. The rate was ~118 to 1 back then. Today the rate is 77 to 1, so if the connections would have waited to cash the checks, they would have got ~$12.8M.

Thanks for bringing him up. Type in his name in youtube and there are a lot of videos to see.

Anybody know of the most successful offspring??
