Rapid Redux to bypass Claiming Crown

Owner Robert Cole told Daily Racing Form on Saturday that Rapid Redux, who scored a modern record 20th straight win on Monday, will bypass the Claiming Crown on December 3 at Fair Grounds.

The five-year-old Pleasantly Perfect gelding was pre-entered in the $50,000 Claiming Crown Iron Horse Stakes.

“It’s $13,000 to ship with plane transfer, and that made no sense at all,” Cole said. “If you run second, you lose $7,000.”

Cole and trainer David Wells said they will try for another record instead and attempt to break Citation’s mark of 19 wins in one season, set during his Triple Crown season of 1948, according to the Form. Rapid Redux is 18-for-18 this season.

“There’s a half-dozen races around the area,” Cole said. “He’ll run once, maybe twice in December, but definitely once. It’s still wide open where we go.”

As an owner myself, money should ALWAYS be a deciding factor especially for small stables. RR is the claim of all claims. The owner will probabaly never make this amount of $ on any one horse in this amount of time ever again. What he does now will deternine the future success of his stable. He has made good decisions so far. I would luz to see him run here (FG), but I will not second guess the owner. He is doing a great job.

Disappointing. Sometimes the money shouldn't be the deciding factor.
