Mister Marti Gras surged powerfully in final sixteenth of a mile to post a half-length win in the $109,700 Ack Ack Handicap (G3) on Friday’s Breeders’ Cup World Championships card at Churchill Downs.

The chestnut Belong to Me gelding won his second graded stakes of the year, having taken the Washington Park Handicap (G3) in September on the synthetic Polytrack surface at Arlington Park. He entered the 1 1/16-mile Ack Ack off a fourth-place finish, beaten by 1 1/4 lengths, in the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G2) on October 8.

Chris Block trains Mister Marti Gras for owner-breeder Lothenbach Stables, who bred him in Kentucky out of stakes-placed winner Miss Marta, by Cure the Blues. Mister Marti Gras covered the distance in 1:45.68 on a sealed, muddy track.

“He ran really well. I was a little concerned about the track because he’s never run over a surface like this [muddy], but he’s handled every track he’s been on, Block said. “Assuming he comes out of the race well, we’ll think about going to the Clark [Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs on November 25].”
