Robert Cole’s Rapid Redux, who has won 18 straight races, tops a list of 128 horses nominated to the 2011 Claiming Crown, which will be run on December 3 at Fair Grounds.
Trained by David Wells, the five-year-old Pleasantly Perfect gelding will attempt to tie New Mexico-bred Peppers Pride and 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta for the modern record for most consecutive wins by a U.S.-based horse (19) when he runs in a seven-furlong starter allowance race on Thursday at Laurel Park.
Claimed for $6,250 last fall by Wells on behalf of Cole, Rapid Redux has gained a national following as he has won 18 straight races, averaging one start about every two weeks, in the starter allowance ranks at seven tracks across the Mid-Atlantic region.
Supplemental nominations—or 5% of the race’s purse—will be accepted for
the Claiming Crown races through November 18. Pre-entries for all six of the Claiming Crown races will be taken November 21, at which time nominated horses must be declared for a specific race.
Final entries for the races will be taken on Wednesday, November 30.
