For everything Illinois-bred Giant Oak has done in his career—win two Grade 1 races, be named state-bred horse of the year—the five-year-old Giant’s Causeway horse trained by Chris Block has yet to win at Hawthorne Race Course.

Giant Oak will break from the outside post in a field of ten entered for Saturday’s $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup Stakes (G2). The Virginia Tarra Trust homebred has two runner-up finishes in two starts at Hawthorne—including a second-place finish in last year’s Gold Cup, which was used as a prep for the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G3), in which he was placed fourth after finishing fifth.

While winless since his Donn victory on February 5, Giant Oak did finish third to Tizway in the Whitney Invitational Handicap (G1) on August 6. He will be stretching out beyond 1 1/8 miles for the first time since the Marathon last November.

Mister Marti Gras and Where’s Sterling, who each won Grade 3 races in their most recent starts, along with Grade 3 winners Headache and Rule are also entered in the race.

Rule, who won the 2009 Boyd Gaming’s Delta Jackpot Stakes (G3) as a two-year-old and the 2010 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at three, most recently finished third to Havre de Grace in the Woodward Stakes (G1).
