Grade 3 winner Bearpath euthanized after injury

Grade 3 winner Bearpath was euthanized on Friday due to complications after suffering a broken shoulder during the John’s Call Stakes on August 5 at Saratoga Race Course.

Trainer Ian Wilkes said the injury proved too much despite efforts to save the five-year-old Dynaformer gelding.

“Over the past couple of weeks, Bearpath had started to go the wrong way, and while we remained hopeful he would turn the corner, he did not,” Wilkes said. “We regretfully had to put him down today.”

Owned Lothenbach Stables purchased Bearpath for $170,000 from Darby Dan Farm, agent for consignor and breeder Whisper Hill Farm, at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Bearpath won the 2010 Pan American Stakes (G3) among four wins from 25 starts. He earned $380,969 in four seasons and also finished second in the 2010 Sword Dancer Invitational Stakes (G1).
