Arc, Breeders’ Cup possible for Danedream after dominant German win

Posted: Sunday, September 04, 2011 4:33 PM

by Mike Curry

Trainer Peter Schiergen’s improving three-year-old filly Danedream soundly defeated older males in a German Group 1 for the second straight time on Sunday at Baden-Baden.

After a five-length dismantling of the opposition in the Grosser Preis von Berlin Duetschland Preis (Ger-G1) on July 24, the Lomitas (GB) filly throttled her competition again with a six-length romp in the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-G1).

"She does not look like much but the way she has improved this season has been quite astonishing," Schiergen told Racing Post. "I shall now discuss the possibilities with the owners.”

Schiergen, who won this race for the fifth time as a trainer after also winning twice as a jockey, said Sunday’s win opens up several major opportunities for Danedream, including the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-G1) on October 2 at Longchamp. Owned by Gestut Burg Eberstein, she completed 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) under Andreas Starke in 2:37.52 on turf rated as very soft.

"One option would be to supplement her for the Arc or the [Emirates Airline] Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1), and she is also entered in two very valuable races in Japan," Schiergen said.

Bred in Germany by Gestut Brummerhof, Danedream is out of the Danehill mare Danedrop and is from the family of French champion Indian Rose, Group 1 winners and sires Vert Amande and Le Nain Jaune, and stakes winner and sire Mulberry (Fr).

Night Magic, a German classic winner in 2009 and winner of the 2010 Grosser Preis von Baden, finished a distant second. This year’s IDEE Duetsches Derby (Ger-G1) (German Derby) winner Waldpark finished last of six.
