Purse doubled for Hawthorne Gold Cup

The purse for the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (G2), the centerpiece of Hawthorne Race Course's fall meeting, has been raised from $250,000 to $500,000.

After being run for $250,000 in 2010, the Hawthorne Gold Cup purse was doubled after the release of casino impact fee money from escrow. The race will be held on October 8.

“The return of the Hawthorne Gold Cup to $500,000 was very important to us, and I was pleased that our horsemen recognized the significance of this race as well,” Hawthorne Assistant General Manager Jim Miller said. “The Gold Cup is the richest dirt race in Illinois and consistently sends horses to the Breeders’ Cup.”

Other highlights of the track’s 12-race stakes schedule include the Hawthorne Derby (G3) for three-year-olds on turf on October 15 and the Illinois Festival of Racing on October 22, featuring six Illinois-bred restricted stakes races.

Hawthorne will open for live racing on October 3 and run through December 31.
