Multiple graded stakes winner Kensei was euthanized on Tuesday after breaking down during a gallop on the Belmont Park training track.

The five-year-old Mr. Greeley horse suffered a broken right front cannon bone and was euthanized by a private veterinarian, according to a statement from the New York Racing Association.

Kensei campaigned for the late Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Stables, won five of his 18 career starts, and earned $751,364. Kensei’s most notable victories came in the 2009 Jim Dandy Stakes (G2) at Saratoga Race Course and the Dwyer Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park.

Kensei won the Salvator Mile Stakes (G3) on July 2 and finished second in the Majestic Light Stakes on July 31, both at Monmouth Park.

Trainer Steve Asmussen declined to comment when contacted on Wednesday.

Bred in Kentucky by Gulf Coast Farms, Kensei was out of the Belong to Me mare Private Feeling and was a half brother to dual champion and 2010 Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Lookin At Lucky.

Poor, poor Kensei. I always looked forward to seeing him run. My heartfelt condolences to all those connected with him, especially Mr. Asmussen. A trainer is closer to his horses than almost anyone else and this has to be a big blow to Steve.

Such a tragedy when any horse breaks down!! Back when he was still at the top of his game, Kensei was quite a formidable opponent on the dirt. Condolences!!
