Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (Ire-G1) winner Treasure Beach (GB) wore down game pacesetter Ziyarid (Ire) to post a determined victory in the $400,000 Secretariat Stakes (G1) on Saturday at Arlington Park.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien for owners Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, and Susan Magnier, the three-year-old Galileo (Ire) colt was cutting back in distance for the 1 1/4-mile Secretariat after making each of his previous four starts at about 1 1/2 miles. Treasure Beach had no problem making the distance shift or adjusting to American racing, stalking Ziyarid through leisurely fractions on yielding turf and challenging that foe in the stretch.

Treasure Beach outfinished Prix Daphnis (Fr-G3) winner Ziyarid in a thrilling stretch duel to prevail by a neck and completed 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.91 under Colm O’Donoghue as the 3-to-2 favorite. O’Donoghue said the win was much more measured than it appeared.

“He wasn’t doing much. He was finding it quite easy in the homestretch,” O’Donoghue said. “He just kept plugging on for me. He’s very adaptable and can go on any ground.”

Ziyarid, a homebred of the Aga Khan trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, was 1 1/2 lengths clear of third-place finisher Banned.

“He had a perfect race. He was beaten by a true Group 1 horse,” Royer-Dupre said. “I’m delighted we came. I think the horse proved himself.”

Treasure Beach, second in this year’s Investec Epsom Derby (Eng-G1), improved to five wins from ten starts, including three wins from five races this season. He boosted his career earnings to $1,869,695.

Bred in Great Britain by Ashley House Stud, Treasure Beach is out of the winning Mark of Esteem (Ire) mare Honorine, a half sister to Group 2 winner Indian Creek. Treasure Beach’s sire, Galileo (Ire), stands for a private fee at Coolmore Stud in Ireland.

“Colm and Aidan were pretty confident coming over so when the two of them are confident you have to be pretty happy,” said Charlie O’Connor, representing Coolmore.

Treasure Beach is absolutely a legitimate threat to win this year's Breeders Cup Turf at Churchill Downs. As Coolmore-Ireland paid $25,000 about 2 month's ago, during the early enrollment period to supplement him into this year's Breeders Cup. Treasure Beach finished his 2yr.old season by finishing 3rd to Frankel in the G2 Juddmonte Royal-Lodge Stakes at Ascot. He began his 3yr.old season by beating King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, Nathaniel, in the G3 Chester Vase. Then Treasure Beach was mugged right on the wire at Epsom, and beaten a nose by Pour Moi in the G1 Epsom Derby. Bounced right back to beat his stablemate, Seville, in the G1 Irish Derby. Now he comes to Arlington and win's the premier G1 turf race in the America for 3yr.old's. Treasure Beach's sire, Galileo, was a monster on the turf in Europe in his day. This colt will get weight in the Breeders Cup Turf from the older horses, and will be a load to beat, IMO.
