Groupie Doll impressive in Gardenia Stakes romp

Fred and William Bradley’s homebred Groupie Doll entered the $100,000 Gardenia Stakes (G3) at Ellis Park on Saturday as the least experienced of the dozen starters for the one-mile contest but emerged as clearly the best of the field.

Unraced at two, the three-year-old Bowman’s Band filly was making just her fourth start and first in a stakes race. Despite bobbling at the start, regular rider Greta Kuntzweiler moved the chestnut filly from fifth to third after a half-mile. She burst through an opening on the rail in midstretch and powered home for a convincing three-length victory.

The Gardenia was the third consecutive victory for Groupie Doll. After finishing unplaced in her debut at Churchill Downs on June 4, she followed with a 3 ¼-length maiden win at the  Louisville track, then delivered a dominant 8 ½-length tally in an allowance race at Ellis.

Groupie Doll improved to three wins from four starts and built her bankroll to $113,130. She is the first stakes winner and second winner out of the winning Silver Deputy mare Deputy Doll.
