John Liviakis’ homebred Mighty Caroline enjoyed a perfect trip under Joel Rosario and powered to a 1 ¼-length win in the $150,000 Sorrento Stakes (G3) for two-year-old fillies at Del Mar on Friday night.
The Stormy Atlantic filly tracked the pace set by River Kiss, who led through a quarter-mile in :22.94 and a half-mile in :46.40, before launching her winning move entering the stretch. Mighty Caroline seized command in deep stretch and surged to the open-length victory.
“Golden trip,” Rosario said. “Right where I wanted to be. She was a little nervous at the beginning, but then she relaxed. That’s the key with her—get her to relax. She’s a nice filly. I think she can run on, too. I think I still had something left [at the end.] She’s been training real well and today she ran real well. This race should help her.”
River Kiss held on for second, a head in front of third-place finisher Heleonor Rugby.
Mighty Caroline entered off a runner-up finish in the Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park on July 16. She improved to two wins from three starts and earnings of $140,000. She is the first starter out of the unraced Maria’s Mon mare Mighty Renee and comes from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Over All.
Mighty Caroline’s trainer, Melody Conlon, won her first career stakes on Friday. She said Mighty Caroline will be pointed to the Del Mar Debutante (G1) on September 3.
