One horse was euthanized and her jockey was taken to a hospital following a three-horse spill in the ninth race on Sunday at Del Mar.
Be Driven, a five-year-old Poteen mare making her first start in more than a year, broke down approaching the far turn while racing in sixth place in the field of 12, unseating jockey Victor Espinoza.
Trailing horses Katy’s Kitty and Bonita Montana were unable to avoid the injured horse and also fell, unseating jockeys Joel Rosario and Martin Pedroza, respectively.
Be Driven was euthanized on the track with a broken left fetlock, according to a track veterinarian report. Espinoza was taken to Scripps Hospital in Encinitas for X-rays of an ankle injury.
The two other jockeys and their mounts appeared to have escaped injury.
The race was a six-furlong claiming event for fillies and mares on the synthetic Polytrack surface.
Be Driven, trained by Sam Scolamieri at San Luis Rey Downs, had one win and three seconds from seven starts and earned $46,780 for owners Ed Ahrens, Dave Austin, Henry Santiago, and Ted Serna.
