Stakes winner Devil by Design returned from a nearly eight-month layoff on Sunday and fired off a career-best performance in the $100,000 Chicago Handicap (G3) at Arlington Park, powering past Tidal Pool and Dr. Zic in the stretch and posting a 1 ¾-length victory over late-running La Rocca.

Ridden by Corey Nakatani, the five-year-old Medaglia d’Oro mare shook off both rust and a pair of disappointing starts in her previous two races with a razor-sharp win.

Following a productive summer campaign, which included a win in the Lucy Scribner Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, Devil by Design was overmatched in her final two starts of 2010, when she was badly beaten in both the Gallant Bloom Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park on September 22 and in the Chilukki Stakes (G2) on November 6 at Churchill Downs.

Leading up to her return, trainer Bill Mott guided Devil by Design through a series of swift weekly workouts at Churchill Downs throughout June with the goal of running the mare at her preferred distance of seven furlongs in the Chicago Handicap. Sent off at odds of 4.30-to-1, Devil by Design responded by improving her record at that distance to five wins in seven starts, finishing in 1:25.74 on Arlington’s synthetic Polytrack surface.

La Rocca finished one length clear of 2010 Kentucky Oaks (G1) third-place finisher and 1.70-to-1 favorite Tidal Pool, who battled through midstretch before giving way. Grade 1 winner Dr. Zic also competed for six furlongs after setting the pace but could not sustain her speed and faded to finish fourth.

Devil by Design’s first graded stakes victory boosted her career record to six wins in 14 starts and $259,874 in earnings. She is out of the stakes-placed winning Devil His Due mare Beauty’s Due and is a half sister to stakes winner Kolo.
