Havre de Grace outclasses Obeah foes

Fox Hills Farms’ Havre de Grace continued to make her case as arguably the best older female in the nation on Saturday as she won with minimal urging from jockey Gabriel Saez in the $168,000 Obeah Stakes (G3) at Delaware Park.

The Obeah was the third consecutive graded stakes victory for the four-year-old Saint Liam filly, who has never finished worse than third in 11 career starts.

Havre de Grace, most recently victorious in the Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park, and Tiz Miz Sue tracked the pace of front-runner Sarah’s Song before Havre de Grace took the lead entering the final turn and cruised through the stretch with Saez never touching his whip for a 2 ¼-length victory.

“Her effort today was what we were looking for and wanting before the Delaware Handicap [Grade 2 on July 16],” trainer Larry Jones said.

Out of the winning Carson City mare Easter Bunnette, Havre de Grace has earned $1,371,175 with six wins from her 11 starts. She finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic (G1) to close her three-year-old campaign.
