Animal Kingdom to work Monday at Belmont

Posted: Wednesday, June 01, 2011 5:13 PM

In stark contrast to his preparation for the Preakness Stakes (G1), Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Animal Kingdom will ship to Belmont Park about a week before the Belmont Stakes (G1) with a breeze scheduled on the surface for Monday.

Animal Kingdom shipped to Pimlico Race Course on the day of the Preakness, and the Leroidesanimaux (Brz) colt finished second to Derby fourth-place finisher Shackleford in the middle jewel of U.S. Thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. Shackleford is already on the grounds of the sprawling Elmont, New York, megaplex.

Barry Irwin of Team Valor International confirmed Wednesday what Daily Racing Form reported Tuesday, that Animal Kingdom would most likely ship from trainer H. Graham Motion’s Fair Hill Training Center base in Northeast Maryland on Saturday, get his first feel for Belmont on Sunday, and breeze Monday. Motion said the only variable to change that schedule would be weather.

In other workout news, Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) winner and Derby seventh-place finisher Brilliant Speed breezed five furlongs in 1:03.11 on Wednesday at Belmont. Joel Rosario will retain the mount.

Speaking of jockeys, some of the biggest news on the Belmont scene ten days before the race was on the rider front with Javier Castellano picking up the mount on Gotham Stakes (G3) winner Stay Thirsty, and Ramon Dominguez, who rode that colt to a 12th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, getting the mount on Mucho Macho Man, third in the Derby and sixth in the Preakness.
