Belmont Stakes (G1) hopeful Santiva breezed five furlongs at Churchill Downs on Saturday morning in preparation for the 1 1/2-mile classic, which is slated for June 11 at Belmont Park.
Tom Walters’ 2010 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) winner completed the five-furlong drill in 1:00.60 on a track rated as fast under assistant trainer Brendan Walsh. Santiva breezed in company with maiden Golden Gulch, a stablemate with trainer Eddie Kenneally.
Santiva’s workout ranked fifth of 43 timed moves at the distance, and he galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.60.
“He worked really, really well today,” Kenneally said. “He’s very fit. He went the minute and three-fifths nicely and didn’t overexert himself.”
The three-year-old Giant’s Causeway colt finished sixth in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1).
“We are still playing it by ear in regards to the Belmont, but he will likely end up in the race,” Kenneally said.
Michael Lauffer’s and Bill Cubbedge’s Preakness Stakes (G1) winner Shackleford is scheduled to be shipped on Sunday at 5 p.m. EDT from Churchill Downs to New York to prepare for the Belmont.
Kentucky Derby runner-up and Belmont hopeful Nehro is slated to breeze six furlongs Monday at Churchill.
