Pants On Fire, the 8.10-to-1 second betting choice in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on Saturday, almost certainly will miss the Preakness Stakes (G1) and probably will be sidelined for at least two months after bleeding significantly in his ninth-place finish.

The Jump Start colt will be shipped to trainer Kelly Breen’s barn at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

“One of the things we’re working on is his immune system,” Breen said. “We were staying on top of his lungs coming into this race so it’s a bit of setback to say we have to work on him. Coming off a mile-and-a-quarter race, it’s tough to say he’s not fit now, but you have to start from the inside out and heal him up. He’ll probably be going back to the track soon but he’ll just be doing it nice and easy.”

Breen said, barring a “miraculous recovery,” Pants On Fire will miss the Preakness on May 21. His most likely next start will be the Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) on July 31 at Monmouth.

As for the colt’s finish, Breen said he was pleased with the Louisiana Derby (G2) winner’s effort and the effort of jockey Rosie Napravnik.

“There wasn’t too much to fault,” Breen said. “The pace wasn’t too, too hot and we have a healthy horse now after the race, leg-wise. I’m content with what happened and to move forward. He didn’t get beat that far, he never stopped trying. He has a lot of fight in him.”

Do any of you who criticize whips ride? And, if you do ride, what is your formal training? Knowledge of your subject matter will answer your complaints.

I guess if you don't like horses getting whipped, outlaw the whips.

Animal Kingdom didn't need the whip because he was going to win easy. Had nothing to do with how "real" his jockey was. John V. would have been much "rougher" if his horse was backing up too. Go watch the 1998 BC mile where Da Hoss was hit numerous times by this "real" jockey to get the horse to win.
