Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Archarcharch underwent successful surgery to repair a condylar fracture on Sunday, but the injury will mean the end of the Arch colt’s racing career.

Val Yagos, who owns Archarcharch with her husband, Robert, told fans on her Facebook page that the decision has been made to retire the colt.

“Archarcharch made it through surgery like a champ. His racing career is over. Too much damage but he is good and that is what is important,” Val Yagos wrote on her Facebook page.

Archarcharch underwent surgery to repair a condylar fracture to his left front leg on Sunday at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington.

Trained by William “Jinks” Fires and ridden by his son-in-law Jon Court, Archarcharch finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) after breaking from the inside post at odds of 12.50-to-1.

Archarcharch won three of seven career starts, including the Arkansas Derby and Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park, and earned $832,744 in two seasons. Robert Yagos paid $60,000 for Archarcharch at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Bred in Kentucky by Grapestock LLC, Archarcharch is one of four winners from five starters out of the stakes-placed winning Woodman mare Woodman’s Dancer and is a half brother to stakes winner Run Sully Run.

Classy owners, both for riding the trainer's son-in-law and making the right decision to retire a horse that has treated them well.

My heart just went to my feet while watching the race--JC did a good job for the horse and am glad surgery was a succes. The whole family support of AAA was so touching, and the trainer will definately,I believe,be in the position for more good horses--he deserves it!!!Maybe that Derby winner--after all thats the DREAM,and one more thing--I sure liked the way Court rode--he is a very good jockey!!!!!

I saw AAA stumble at the gate and I thought he'd go down. JC did well keeping him up and then pulling him up when he realized he wasn't right. We had $10 on him to win but that does't matter. What matters is the colt will be fine. So glad the injury not any worse than it is.
