Santa Anita Derby (G1) runner-up Comma to the Top emerged from his last-place finish the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on Saturday with an injured ankle and will be sidelined for a least two months.

“It appears my horse chipped his left ankle,” trainer Peter Miller said of the Bwana Charlie colt, who was sent off at 35.80-to-1 in the 19-horse field and tracked pacesetter Shackleford from second then third before fading in the final furlong under Patrick Valenzuela. “We could see it when we brought him back. I believe we will have Dr. (Wayne) McIlwrath [V.M.D.] from Colorado State University take it out in the next little while. Then he’s got to go on the sidelines for at least 60 days.

“This isn’t the end of the world and hopefully it won’t be too bad. My horse tried; he always tries and for the first mile of the race he was right there. In the end it looks like we do have a real good miler or mile and a sixteenth horse. We got to run in the Kentucky Derby. How special is that?”

Comma to the Top was California’s top juvenile last season with six wins from ten starts, including the CashCall Futurity (G1) to close the season. Winless in four starts this year, he entered the Derby off a close runner-up finish to Midnight Interlude in the Santa Anita Derby on April 9.

Hey Jerry-study for your trainer's license, breed, buy or find a horse to train, work your ass off to make it to the Derby and then run last. Earn the right to be a pro. Don't just assume it.

This poor horse was sucked bone dry by Miller. He knew it before the Derby. He never should have run.
