Barinka breaks through at top level at Te Aroha

Following Barinka’s win in a stakes at Ellerslie last month, trainer Karen Zimmerman ambitiously set her sights on victory at the highest level and the six-year-old Shinko King mare delivered on Saturday at Te Aroha in the $156,420 Stewart Browne New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (NZ-G1).

Barinka entered off a strong head victory in the 1,400-meter (6.96-furlong) Westbury Classic on March 9 at Ellerslie, and won by the same margin from Smoulder in a thrilling finish on Saturday for her first group victory.

Barinka burst from midpack in the straight, wore down pacesetter Fleur de Lune, and outbattled game runner-up Smoulder for the victory. She covered 1,600 meters (7.95 furlongs) under Hayden Tinsley in 1:35.81 on turf rated as slow.

Campaigned by a syndicate, Barinka improved to eight wins, seven seconds, and five thirds form 34 career starts.

Fleur de Lis held on for third, a neck back. Champion Banchee finished seventh and highly regarded stakes winner Guiseppina, who was seeking a fourth consecutive victory, finished 12th.

Barinka is out of the winning Hey Baba Riba mare Hay Barlu.
