Hawthorne boosts Illinois Derby purse

A sponsorship agreement with Betfair-TVG will help boost the purse of the TVG Illinois Derby (G3) to $300,000, up from $250,000.

The race was worth $500,000 last year, but Hawthorne Race Course officials received permission from state racing regulators in January to reduce the purse $250,000 to maintain overnight purses.

The Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) is limited to 20 starters with graded stakes earnings used to determine the field if the race is oversubscribed. The purse increase will help increase the winner’s chances of making the field.

“The TVG Illinois Derby is our marquee race of the spring meet and we want to do everything we can to make it the most competitive race possible while continuing our run on sending winners from our race to the Derby,” Hawthorne Assistant General Manager Jim Miller said.  “TVG has been a great partner with Hawthorne and the additional sponsorship money is best put forth going into the purse of our Grade 3 event.”

The 54th edition of the race will be contested on Saturday, April 9.
