Fort Hughes euthanized after breakdown during workout

Posted: Sunday, March 13, 2011 3:47 PM

Jimmy Winkfield Stakes winner Fort Hughes broke down Sunday morning during a planned workout on the training track at Belmont Park and was euthanized.

Jimmy Winkfield Stakes winner Fort Hughes broke down Sunday morning during a planned workout on the training track at Belmont Park and was euthanized.

The chestnut three-year-old colt by Henny Hughes won two of three career starts, including a dominant 4 3/4-length win in the Jimmy Winkfield on January 17 in his only start this year. Darley Stable’s homebred Fort Hughes won his debut by 5 1/2 lengths in October at Belmont Park before finishing second by a head in the Southampton Stakes at Parx Racing in December in his final race at two.

“He was a very talented horse who reminded me a lot of his sire,” said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, who said the injury was a fractured cannon bone. “This is an extremely tough part of this game. There are a lot of highs, but also a lot of lows.”

Fort Hughes, who was an early nominee to the Triple Crown series, was being pointed to the Bay Shore Stakes (G3) on April 19 at Aqueduct.

Forth Hughes was produced by Argentine champion Forty Greeta (Arg), by Roar.

I agree that Kiaran McLaughlin would have saved him if he could have.

Kiaran McLaughlin is a well respected trainer...I'm sure with this colt's record, and his breeding, that if saving him was possible, it would have been considered. Likely, it was a BAD fracture, and the kindest thing was to euthanize him, versus spend months and months trying to rehab him, dealing with likely laminitis in other legs/feet due to non-weight bearing ability in the injured leg (remember the pain Barbaro went through to try and "heal"...it just isn't kind to the horse to put them through so much agony in the name of trying to save them). If the fracture was as bad as I imagine it was, he likely would never have even been sound enough for stud duty or any kind of pleasure riding, and there just isn't any market for a "pretty pasture sound only" thoroughbred. Sad news on this colt, but I'm sure Kiaran did the kindest thing possible.

Depending on the severity, a fractured cannon bone can be healed! Given the colts race record 2-1-0 out of three starts and a Beyer of 104, you would think his life would be spared and be given a chance to heal. I wish people would STOP being so quick to put these horses to death! Can we say stud duty? I know, how about retraining for dressage or for a pleasure mount? Surrender the horse, not his life. More than likely, he would've healed and become a nice riding horse. What a shame :(
