Prince Will I Am, Awesome Maria power to victory at Gulfstream

Prince Will I Am bided his time under jockey John Velazquez before unleashing a powerful burst from midpack to prevail in the $150,000 Mac Diarmida Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday (video).

The 1 3/8-mile turf race attracted a dozen veterans ranging in age from four to nine. Velazquez settled the lukewarm 3-to-1 favorite in sixth early before angling out for room after a mile to overhaul the leaders, besting 2008 Canadian champion turf male Rahy’s Attorney by three-quarters of a length. Nine-year-old Musketier (Ger) closed gallantly from tenth to finish third, a half-length back behind Rahy’s Attorney.

Prince Will I Am covered the distance in 2:13.04 on firm turf for trainer Michelle Nihei and owner Casa Farms I.

“It worked out perfectly,” Velazquez said. “We held our position into the first turn and I was right where I wanted to be at the half-mile pole. Turning for home I asked him and he responded.”

The Mac Diarmida was the third graded stakes victory for Prince Will I Am, who also finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon (G3) in November at Churchill Downs but was disqualified for interference and placed tenth. The Victory Gallop ridgling is the first starter out of the winning Dynaformer mare Dyna’s Dynamo and increased his bankroll to $386,090 with five wins from 13 starts.

One race earlier at Gulfstream in the $100,000 Sabin Stakes (G3), E. Paul Robsham Stables’ homebred Awesome Maria posted her second career graded stakes win as she pulled away from six opponents in the stretch for an impressive 4 3/4-length victory (video).

The four-year-old Maria’s Mon filly tracked front-runner Catch a Thief for the first three-quarters of a mile before taking charge, completing the one-mile race in 1:36.38 on a track rated as fast. Amen Hallelujah easily took second, 5 ¼ lengths clear of Catch a Thief.

Winner of the 2009 Matron Stakes (G2), Awesome Maria came into the Sabin off a 2 1/2-month break after finishing second in the Gazelle Stakes (G1) on November 27.

Awesome Maria improved her earnings to $512,375 with four wins from nine starts. She is the first starter out the unraced Awesome Again mare Discreetly Awesome, a half sister to Grade 1 winners Discreet Cat and Discreetly Mine.
