Square Eddie sets track record in return

Making his first start in more than a year, Grade 1 winner Square Eddie made an emphatic return on Friday, setting a track record for 6½ furlongs in a 3¼-length win.

Trained by Doug O'Neill for J. Paul Reddam, the five-year-old Smart Strike horse took the lead under Joel Rosario on the backstretch and then drew off to the overwhelming win as the 5-to-2 second choice. Square Eddie’s time of 1:13.11 eclipsed the previous record of 1:13.71 set April 4, 1998, by Son of a Pistol in the Potrero Grande Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G2).

Square Eddie won the 2008 Lane’s End Breeders’ Futurity (G1) in his first North American start winning one of four starts in England. He finished second to Midshipman in the 2008 Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) but then went winless in six starts at three-year-old, finishing sixth in the Malibu Stakes (G1) on December 26, 2009, in his final start before Friday.

He was retired in February 2010 following a suspensory injury and stood the season at Vessels Stallion Farm in California, covering 34 mares. He had been working out regularly since November en route to his start.

What a good story? He came back and romped off of such a long lay-off with a soft tissue injury and set a new track record set more than 12 years ago. Good for racing!
