Juvenile Fillies Analysis 9/13:
One new one in from Illinois, one top one out

Posted: Monday, September 13, 2010 5:47 PM

by Mark Simon

It was a bad week for the connections of Starlight Stable’s Position Limit, the impressive winner of the Adirondack Stakes (G2) and considered the leader of her division on the East Coast.

The daughter of Bellamy Road had skipped the Spinaway Stakes (G1) on September 5 at Saratoga Race Course, awaiting the Frizette Stakes (G1) on October 9 on Belmont Park, but on September 9 her owners announced she would be sidelined the remainder of the year with an ankle injury.

With that filly out of the picture, it gives hope to a lot of other owners of fillies being considered for the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Churchill Downs on November 5.

One filly stepping to the fore on September 11 was the Illinois-bred Wonderlandbynight. The daughter of Sky Mesa won the one-mile Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (G3) at Arlington Park with a strong rally from far back to win going away by 2 1/2 lengths. Bred and trained by Michael Reavis and owned by Mark Dedomenico, she has won all four of her starts, including the Ontario Debutante Stakes at Woodbine. All her wins have come on Polytrack and she will have to race on dirt at Churchill Downs.

On September 18, there will be several races for juvenile fillies that may produce a contender. Those races are the one-mile Natalma Stakes (Can-G3) on turf at Woodbine, the 6 1/2-furlong Barretts Debutante Stakes at Fairplex, and the seven-furlong Golferette Stakes at Belmont Park. The Natalma is a “Win and You’re In” race.
