Thiskyhasnolimit helped pad the bankroll of owners Cathy and Bob Zollars and Mark Wagner on Monday with a lucrative victory in the $300,400 Smarty Jones Stakes at Parx Racing (video).
The Smarty Jones is the local prep for the $1-million Pennsylvania Derby (G2), where Thiskyhasnolimit could have a rematch with Concord Point, the colt who defeated him in both the Iowa (G2) and West Virginia (G2) Derbys following a seasonal debut win in the Matt Winn Stakes.
Ridden by Jamie Theriot for the first time, Thiskyhasnolimit raced toward the rear of the seven-horse field early before mounting a four-wide move on the far turn. He reached the front turning for home and never was threatened by eventual runner up Nacho Friend as he streaked to a two-length victory in 1:40.49 for 1 mile, 70 yards on a track rated as fast. Nacho Friend had finished third behind Concorde Point and Exhi in the West Virginia Derby.
Thiskyhasnolimit, who also won the Iroquois Stakes (G3) as a two-year-old, has won four of ten starts and earned $449,439 for trainer Steve Asmussen.
The Smarty Jones win capped a stakes double for Theriot, who also won the $251,000 Turf Monster Handicap aboard favored Chamberlain Bridge, closing from midpack to win a blanket finish by a half-length over A Unique Treasure (video). Less than one length covered the top four finishers and less than four lengths covered the entire ten-horse field at the finish.
Trained by Bret Calhoun for Carl Moore Management, Chamberlain Bridge has won three consecutive races at as many tracks, and the Turf Monster victory moved the six-year-old War Chant gelding past the $1-million mark in earnings with 15 wins from 29 starts and $1,040,245 in earnings.
