Souper Spectacular, half to Zenyatta, wins at Saratoga

After unplaced finishes in his first two starts on the main track, Souper Spectacular surged clear in his turf debut to win the fifth race on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course by two lengths.

The chestnut Giant’s Causeway colt is a half brother to unbeaten two-time champion Zenyatta and multiple Grade 1 winner Balance. He is one of four winners from five starters out of the winning Kris S. mare Vertigineaux.

Purchased by Live Oak Plantation for $1,150,000 at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, Souper Spectacular is trained by Seth Benzel. He stalked the pace from second in the one-mile turf race under a firm hold by jockey John Velazquez. Souper Spectacular wore down pacesetter Baatesh in the stretch and scooted clear to prevail in 1:36.16 on firm turf.

“He’s one of those colts that has a lot of talent but has been a slow learner,” Benzel said. “Being a half to Zenyatta doesn’t lower the bar any, but we’ve tried to put that aside and focus on the task at hand. We’re happy that he took to the turf and came home with the win.”

Does this mean that after Zenyatta wins her last prep at Hllywd Pk and then defends her title in the BCC, that we might see her try the turf next year? I have been wondering if she might also be a great turf horse with her style and stride. maybe she could go to dubai in march and win a big race there and become the all-time north american money earner, then retire! Might as well dream big!
