Twirling Candy to give Del Mar Derby a spin

Twirling Candy will try to run his perfect career record to four wins from four races when he starts in a graded stakes for the first time on Sunday in the $300,000 Del Mar Derby (G2).

Twirling Candy has turned heads in opening his career with three straight victories. He won his lone start as a juvenile in November at Hollywood Park before opening this season with a 7¾-length romp on the main track at the Inglewood, California, track.

Moved to the turf for a try in the Oceanside Stakes on July 21, the Candy Ride (Arg) colt delivered, looking much the best in the field of ten three-year-olds in winning by 2¼ lengths. John Sadler, who trains Twirling Candy for owner-breeder Jenny Craig, said the colt has impressed him.

“This is a very talented horse,” Sadler said after the Oceanside win. “He can run on synthetic, grass, or dirt. He’s a serious horse for a lot of serious races.”

After the Oceanside, Sadler gave some consideration to shipping east to compete in the Travers Stakes (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, but he opted to stay in Southern California, noting that San Diego is close to Craig’s home.

While Twirling Candy will make his graded stakes debut, Kid Edward (Ire) will try to improve on his second-place finish in the La Jolla Handicap (G2) on August 14 at Del Mar.

Trained by Jim Cassidy for the Gould Family Trust, Kid Edward finished second to Sidney’s Candy in the La Jolla. Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Sidney’s Candy also is owned by Craig and trained by Sadler.
