The $150,000 Sapling Stakes (G3), Monmouth Park’s premier race for two-year-olds, is an important stop on the road to the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) this fall and attracted nine entrants, including three stakes winners.

Among the likely favorites heading into Saturday’s six-furlong race are stakes winners Madman Diaries, Maybesomaybenot, and Vengeful Wildcat, and stakes-placed Nacho Saint.

Trained by Wesley Ward, Madman Diaries set a track record of :51.13 for 4½ furlongs while breaking his maiden by 9¾ lengths at Woodbine on May 9 after making the early pace. He followed by capturing the Victoria Stakes (VIDEO) in a 9¼-length romp at Woodbine on June 19. The Bring the Heat gelding enters off a runner-up finish on July 17 at the Toronto track in the six-furlong Colin Stakes (VIDEO), in which he had a slim lead through a half-mile then was checked late.

Maybesomaybenot, the only graded stakes winner in the field, will bid for a third consecutive victory. After breaking his maiden in a visually impressive, front-running six-length win at Churchill Downs on July 3, the Sunday Break (Jpn) gelding landed the Sanford Stakes (G2) (VIDEO) in similar fashion at Saratoga Race Course on July 25, defeating Nacho Saint.

Maiden Nacho Saint, a Yes It’s True colt trained by Kelly Breen, will try for his breakthrough win in the Sapling after three consecutive second-place finishes.

Vengeful Wildcat defeated Sapling entrant Brother in Arms by 3½ lengths after drawing off on a muddy track in the Tyro Stakes (VIDEO) on July 25 at Monmouth. The Vindication colt broke his maiden in his previous start on July 5, holding off Nacho Saint by a neck at Monmouth.
