Timber Reserve euthanized after catastrophic breakdown

TIMBER RESERVE

Grade 2 winner Timber Reserve was euthanized on Wednesday at Saratoga Race Course after he suffered catastrophic injuries to his right front leg in the fourth race.

The 2007 Pennsylvania Derby (G2) winner was pulled up on the backstretch by Javier Castellano in the 1 1/8-mile optional claiming race and vanned off the track. New York Racing Association officials confirmed that the six-year-old by Forest Camp subsequently was euthanized.

Timber Reserve won five of 20 starts for trainer John Kimmel, who purchased him for $400,000 at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton February sale of selected two-year-olds in training. Campaigned by Circle E Racing and Phillip Solondz, he earned $772,197 in five seasons. He finished third in the William Donald Schaefer Stakes (G3) on May 15 at Pimlico Race Course in his previous start.

Bred in Kentucky by Mike Harris and Westwind Farms, he was out of stakes-placed winner Fountain Square, by Danzig Connection.

I don't know why the death of Timber Reserve has hurt me so much. He was not the most famous of horses. He wasn't a "glamor boy" like Curlin, Big Brown or even Uncle Moe. But there was something about him that just grabbed my heart and to this day I just can't think of him without hurting and choking up. So Sweet Boy, you may be gone but you have at least one person that will never, ever forget you because in my heart you were a Super Star!!!!

Dr. Kimmel is one of the best. I was in shock when I saw his horse pulled up and searched the web for information. Timber Reserve was one of those horses who always tried. He had heart. John Kimmel always gives his time to the public and the press at Saratoga. I love to watch his interviews and wish I could hear him speak all the time. I am so very sorry for your loss. My tears go out to you all. I'm one of these people who have been following racing for over 50 years now since I was a little kid and my dad used to take me to Saratoga. I am a fan that thinks of all the horses like other sports fans that follow their sports.
I have my all-time favorites (Easy Goer, Prairie Bayou, Afleet Alex, With Anticipation)who will always be in my heart and thoughts. The rest are the players who make the sport what it is. There are so many I have been fond of over the years. Timber was one of these. God Bless the Beasts.

This is awful! What happened? Did he have any soundness issues at all before this--any problems.?

I guess the original comment was removed for being a 9+ on the stupidity level. John C. Kimmel is one of the best Trainers in the world and wouldn't have put the horse at risk unnecessarily. Timber resreve was loved by all who handeled him. myself included.

furthermore, you whose opinions are mostly ridiculous, I believe the trainer is a vet, far more qualified, and hands on with the horse in question...his father was a respected trainer...their careers have spanned more than fifty years...these are good caring people and how dare you castigate them with your outlandish vicious and unknowing comments...
