Gio Ponti to continue racing, target World Cup again

Dual champion and Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) runner-up Gio Ponti will stay in training as a six-year-old and take aim again at the $10-million Emirates Airline Dubai World Cup (UAE-G1).

The Tale of the Cat horse finished fourth in the 2010 World Cup, after garnering Eclipse Awards as champion older male and champion turf male of 2009. He scored the fifth and sixth Grade 1 victories of his career in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1) on July 10 at Belmont Park and Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1) on October 9 at Keeneland Race Course.

At 4-to-1 odds in the Mile, Gio Ponti finished 1 3/4 lengths behind Goldikova (Ire), who won the race for the third straight year and also is scheduled to return as a six-year-old in 2011.

“It is an exciting time to have a tough consistent horse in training as prize money is generally one of the more lucrative sides of our business at the moment,” said Shane Ryan, president of owner Castleton Lyons Farm. “We would like to thank all his fans and well wishers to date. It is our hope that we can continue to campaign him with imagination and of course, success!”

Trained by Christophe Clement, Gio Ponti also finished second in the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) to Zenyatta. He has won 11 of 23 starts and earned $5,037,800. Ryan bred Gio Ponti in the name of his Kilboy Estate.

Gio Ponti is my favorite! He is a great role model for us all. A true champion. I had the pleasure of being present to watch him win the Shadwell Mile at Keeneland. Anyone know where his prep race before Dubai will be???

So happy he is going to continue to run. The sport needs him. I was at the Arlington Million and he should have won again but Ramon wasn't paying attention.
