Hurricane Ike, the The Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial Stakes (G3) winner who many regarded as one of the top “new shooters” pointing toward the Preakness Stakes (G1), will not run in the middle jewel of American racing’s Triple Crown after coming out of a Monday workout “off in his left hind” according to trainer John Sadler.
The Graeme Hall colt worked seven furlongs in 1:25.80 on Monday at Churchill Downs under jockey Robby Albarado. Sadler was not present for the workout and was still in California on Wednesday morning when he informed Pimlico Race Course officials that Ike and Dawn Thrash’s colt would not run.
“My horse isn’t so fine,” Sadler said. “It’s something that came up. I got a call telling me he was ‘off in left hind.’ This is pretty fresh, but it looks similar to the problem he had at Oak Tree. He might have re-injured himself in the same area.”
Hurricane Ike won his career debut on July 5 at Hollywood Park, going five furlongs on Cushion Track in :58.80. He then lost six consecutive races but appeared to be rounding into form with a second-place finish to Eightyfiveinafifty in the Bay Shore Stakes (G3) in his dirt debut before his breakthrough Derby Trial score.
The Thrashes had started Arkansas Derby (G1) winner Line of David in the Derby, and Hurricane Ike would have been the couple’s and Sadler’s first Preakness starter.
“This is extremely disappointing, but what can you do,” Sadler said. “Sometimes they don’t cooperate. Hopefully, we’ll get him into some big races later this year.”
Albarado had the ride on Hurricane Ike for the Preakness, a twist of fate considering Albarado’s primary Derby mount, Sunland Derby (G3) winner Endorsement, also declared from a classic the week of the race with an injury following a workout.

Without Borel on him again, he didn't have a shot at the top three in the Preakness
