Ice Box ruled out of Preakness

Posted: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 5:28 PM

Ice Box, the fast-closing runner-up in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1), will skip the Preakness Stakes (G1), trainer Nick Zito confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

Zito and owner Robert LaPenta decided to instead look toward the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 5, a race they won with Da’ Tara in 2008. Ice Box scored in the Florida Derby (G1) on March 20 before finishing 2 ½ lengths behind Super Saver in a troubled Kentucky Derby trip (video).

“After talking to Mr. LaPenta, we concurred that Ice Box’s race was tremendous, but we also knew it was a tough race,” Zito said. “We feel that we are better suited to wait and pass the Preakness and possibly go on to the Belmont. And hopefully, things work out. Also, we have more evaluation to do with Jackson Bend and will make a decision on his status for the Preakness on Monday.”

Jackson Bend finished 12th in the Derby.

Very disappointed that Ice Box didn't run today. He was my pick to win -- think he would have.

i think only ky derby horses should run in triple crown races. I hope supersaver, dublin or one of tne other derby horses wins preakness and belmont

I had Ice Box to win the Derby too. I start my own list in January each year. I knew Ice Box would be on my Derby short-list when I saw his win in March. Once I knew the track was mud I had Ice Box to win. His closing move in the Derby was a thing of mud splashed beauty. I would never fault the connections of any horse for skipping a triple crown race. I did read a post once where someone suggested that horses that run each consecutive race be eligible for a larger purse if they run in the Derby and then the Preakness, and even larger if the start in all three. I like the incentive, I respect the owners and trainers.

Very Very Smart Move! The horse cam strong at the end. With the Belmont being the longest of the three races, his running style lends itself better to a longer race rather than the shortest race, The Preakness.

Well color me disappointed. I'm of the camp that believes the top finishers in the Derby, barring injury, should move on the the next step in the triple crown races. Not skip one and then pop back in for the Belmont. Thankfully the owners of Alydar didn't feel the way LaPenta does or racing fans would have been denied one heck of a triple crown season back in the 70's.
