Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Super Saver is scheduled to be shipped to Baltimore on May 12 for a planned start in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the $1-million Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 15 at Pimlico Race Course.

Trainer Todd Pletcher spent Monday morning at Churchill Downs before traveling from Louisville to New York. Before leaving, he said that the three-year-old Maria’s Mon colt would walk the shedrow for one more day and then return to the track to jog on Wednesday morning.

“He is doing well,” Pletcher said. “His appetite is good; he is feeling good. Everything in the first 48 hours is very good.”

Pletcher said he would return to Louisville on Thursday or Friday to make a decision on whether to breeze Super Saver before the Preakness or gallop him up to the race.

Pimlico officials also confirmed that Grade 1 winner Dublin, who finished seventh in the Derby, will be shipping into the Preakness Stakes barn on May 11. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said the Afleet Alex colt will take another shot at Super Saver in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness.

Other Derby horses whose connections are considering the Preakness are Ice Box (2nd), Paddy O’Prado (third), Noble’s Promise (fifth), Lookin At Lucky (sixth), Mission Impazible (9th), Jackson Bend (12th), and Conveyance (15th).

Trainer Bob Baffert said sixth-place finisher Lookin Aat Lucky and 15th-place finisher Conveyance “both have a 50-50 chance” of running in the Preakness.

“I am going to stay here four or five days and see how the horses are,” he said from Churchill.

Trainer Ken McPeek said after meeting with the managing partners of Chasing Dreams Racing 2008 that fifth-place finisher Noble’s Promise is possible for the Preakness.

“He ran a great race,” McPeek said. “He is a special colt. Does he have distance limitations? We have to admit he might have them. Do we tinker and see if we can get him to go that far? We’re willing to try.”

Trainers Nick Zito said on Sunday that Derby runner-up Ice Box is doubtful for the Preakness.

Among the new shooters for the Preakness are the top three finishers from The Cliff’s Edge Derby Trial Stakes (G3)—Hurricane Ike, Aikenite, and Pleasant Prince.

Hurricane Ike is one of three horses trainer John Sadler is leaving at Churchill Downs from his nine-horse contingent that came in for Derby week. The rest of that group, including Kentucky Derby runners Sidney’s Candy (17th) and Line of David (18th), are scheduled to return to California on Tuesday.

Hurricane Ike is scheduled to work twice leading up to the Preakness, including Tuesday morning at Churchill Downs.

“He is a horse that is on the improve,” Sadler said. “He is not far behind the other two. He just had some minor things happen during the Derby trail, but he is a pretty nice horse.”

Trainers Mike Machowsky, who conditions Grade 2 winner Caracortado, and Graham Motion, who trains stakes winner Turf Melody, have scheduled weekend workoutss at Santa Anita Park and Pimlico, respectively, to prepare for a possible run in the Preakness.

The Preakness may have lost a contender on Monday as trainer Jonathan Sheppard reported that Bushwhacked spiked a fever.

“We are going to be very cautious with him, and with a race as important as the Preakness only two weeks away, we will have to see,” Sheppard said. “We are looking for improvement, but right now it appears the race is unlikely.”

The Preakness field is limited to 14 starters. If more than 14 nominated three-year-olds are entered, the starters will be determined with the first seven horses given preference by the highest lifetime earnings in graded stakes. The next four starters will be determined by the highest lifetime earnings in all non-restricted stakes, which means stakes that contain no restrictions other than age or sex. The remaining three starters will be determined by the highest lifetime earnings in all races.
