Silverton Hill’s Torlundy collared Swagger Stick after the final jump to win the $45,000 Budweiser Imperial Cup on Saturday at the Aiken Steeplechase in Aiken, South Carolina.
The two-mile race over ten National fences launched steeplechasing’s spring season, and Torlundy gave a courageous performance in a close finish for his first stakes win. Sermon of Love finished third.
“He would kill himself to win, and that’s what he nearly did today,” winning jockey Paddy Young told the Augusta Chronicle.
Young’s wife, Leslie, trains Torlundy for Tommy and Bonnie Hamilton’s Silverton Hill operation in Springfield, Kentucky.
The five-year-old Monarchos gelding, who broke his maiden in a race over the jumps at Colonial Downs in September, covered the trip in 3:40.80. Out of the Woodman mare Jayhawk Judy, he was a $33,000 purchase as yearling by the Hamiltons at the 2006 Keeneland January horses of all ages sale.
