Rachel Alexandra looks strong at Fair Grounds

Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra appears to have bounced out of a runner-up finish in the New Orleans Ladies Stakes on March 13 (video) in good order after a series of strong gallops at Fair Grounds.

“Rachel Alexandra has been galloping along pretty good in the last couple of days,” Fair Grounds clocker Billy Pettingill said Sunday morning. “This morning she went along in about a mile-and-a-half gallop and they let her run along pretty good through traffic. They haven't backed off on her a bit.

“[Trainer] Steve [Asmussen] brought her to the track himself today.”

Rachel Alexandra defeated males three times during a run of five straight Grade 1 wins to close her three-year-old season. The Medaglia d’Oro filly won eight times in as many starts in 2009, including a classic win in the BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (G1) en route to Eclipse Awards as Horse of the Year and champion three-year-old filly.

Owned by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick, Rachel Alexandra was taken out of consideration for the Apple Blossom Invitational Stakes (G1) and a showdown with unbeaten two-time champion Zenyatta after the New Orleans Ladies Stakes, which was her first start in more than six months.
