Sermon of Love, Four Schools set for Imperial Cup

Bill Pape’s Sermon of Love and Mrs. George Ohrstrom Jr.’s Four Schools (Ire) look to be the standouts in $45,000 Budweiser Imperial Cup, the feature race of the Aiken Steeplechase card on Saturday in Aiken, South Carolina.

Four other horses were entered for the two-mile race over National fences that will launch steeplechasing's spring season.

Trained by Jonathan Sheppard, Sermon of Love won two of seven starts last season and finished second in the New York Turf Writers Steeplechase Handicap, considered a Grade 1 race by the National Steeplechase Association, at Saratoga Race Course. Previously campaigned by Calvin Houghland, one of steeplechasing’s most prominent patrons who died last fall, the seven-year-old Pulpit gelding is looking for his second stakes win after capturing the 2006 Raymond G. Woolfe Memorial Stakes.

Four Schools is the 158-pound highweight in the Imperial Cup. The seven-year-old Raise a Grand (Ire) gelding scored a 1 ½-length win in the Helen Haskell Sampson Memorial Hurdle Stakes last September at the Monmouth Hunt Races at Monmouth Park. He captured the 2008 David L. (Zeke) Ferguson Memorial Hurdle Stakes for trainer Richard Valentine.

Also entered are stakes winners Swagger Stick and Riddle, stakes-placed winner Torlundy, and Letter Perfect, who will make his first start since a 2007 maiden win over fences.
