Keeneland receives approval for 50-cent pick threes

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has granted Keeneland approval to offer 50-cent pick three wagers at its upcoming spring meeting.

The previous minimum on the pick three was $1.

“We’ve had 50-cent trifectas for two years and 50-cent pick fours since 2006,” said Jim Goodman, Keeneland’s director of simulcasting. “When we went to the 50-cent pick four, there was some discussion about it hurting our handle, but actually our pick four handle has grown. We think it’s a positive thing for the track and the horse players.

“It technically spreads the money out to more players, because you’ve got more people playing more combinations, and I think that’s a good thing. We’ve always been player friendly at Keeneland. It’s one of our mottos, and I think we’ve proved it with 10-cent superfectas and 50-cent pick threes and pick fours.”

In addition to making the wager more affordable, decreasing the minimum increment can help bettors avoid tax tickets, Goodman said. Winning wagers that pay 300-to-1 or more on a payout of at least $600 are reported to the Internal Revenue Service.

Keeneland’s spring meeting runs from April 2 through April 23.
