Brereton C. Jones’ homebred No Such Word inhaled front-runner Decelerator in the stretch and drove to a dominant 2 1/2-length victory in the Honeybee Stakes (G3) on Saturday at Oaklawn Park.
The 1 1/16-mile Honeybee attracted a field of nine three-year-old fillies, headed by 11-to-10 favorite Beautician, who made her first start since finishing a disappointing seventh in the Hollywood Starlet Stakes (G1) on December 20 at Hollywood Park. Prior to the Hollywood Starlet, Beautician finished second to eventual two-year-old champion filly She Be Wild in the 1 1/16-mile Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) during the Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita on November 6.
No Such Word, on the other hand, was making her stakes debut and first start in a race longer than a mile. She won a one-mile optional claiming race on a sloppy track at Oaklawn on February 14 in her previous start.
Decelerator set a solid pace through a half-mile in :47.06 while jockey Terry Thompson took a firm hold on No Such Word and reserved her in midpack, just behind Beautician. Thompson angled her wide to pass the favorite, and No Such Word seized command in midstretch then increased her advantage to the finish line. She completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.74 on a track rated as fast.
Beautician, who lacked racing room at the top of the stretch, rallied for second, 4 ¼ lengths clear of the late-running Tap Tap Tapping.
No Such Word is the first stakes winner produced by the winning It’s Freezing mare Muskoka Ice. Trained by Cindy Jones, she increased her career earnings to $138,213 with three wins from eight starts.
